What is Leaky Gut?
To understand why this may occur, it’s important to understand what a leaky gut is. Your intestines are a mucosal surface that acts as a barrier between the environment and your body.
Some nutrients or antigens that enter the gut are absorbed. Others are excreted, and some may live in the intestines.
The molecules in the walls of healthy intestines have tight junctions that prevent certain substances from being absorbed. Scientists have found that people with autoimmune disease have changes in those tight junctions.
Those changes create permeability, which allows environmental triggers to enter the body. In people who are genetically predisposed to an autoimmune disease, the body may become confused and attack healthy molecules that are similar to the trigger.
For example, in individuals who have Celiac disease, the body attacks an enzyme called tissue transglutaminase, which is found in many organs in the body. However, the trigger is gliadin, a compound found in gluten.
The intestinal mucosa interacts with the trigger substances to increase permeability in the lining of the gut.
If the trigger is removed, the gut lining can heal and even reverse the autoimmune process.
You may be genetically predisposed to autoimmunity. You can also develop an autoimmune disease as your DNA is damaged from toxins that enter your body from the environment, beauty products, and the foods you eat.

Who has Leaky Gut?
It appears as though most people with autoimmune diseases have leaky gut. However, not everyone with leaky gut has an autoimmune disease.
Either way, you can prevent leaky gut from affecting your health if you heal it.

You may also have trouble losing weight or problems with mood. You may have trouble concentrating or have low energy.
Depending on how you take care of your body, leaky gut can be temporary—it can be caused by a virus or stress. However, if you have a consistently poor diet, chronic stress, toxic overload or bacterial imbalance in your gut, you may have a persistent leaky gut that can cause inflammation and other health problems.

1. Remove Inflammatory Foods
Foods that cause inflammation make leaky gut worse (along with causing weight gain, skin problems, and a whole host of other issues…).
The main culprit is sugar. Researchers are finding that sugar causes inflammation that leads to many health issues, including diabetes and heart disease.
Other foods that are likely to cause inflammation are:
- Dairy
- Gluten
- Nuts and seeds (they contain an enzyme that actually prevents your body from digesting them well)
- Nightshades (eggplant, tomatoes and potatoes fall into this category)
- Alcohol
- Soy
- Artificial ingredients
- Legumes
- Eggs
- NSAIDs (these pain-reducing medications can damage the lining of your gut)
- Acid reducers (can contribute to low stomach acid, which can negatively affect digestion)
Listen to your body. If a particular food doesn’t make you feel well or makes you gain weight overnight, it might be causing inflammation.

Not sure you can help. I’ve been studying my condition for the last 10 years and I cannot sort it. I do everything you’ve suggested and more and I still get reactions to foods. I should have perfect gut bacteria as I’ve eaten more probiotics than most. I only eat the right foods, fats, never sugar never pasta or anything like bread. I’m gluten, Caesin, lactose ( except local goats milk non homogenised ) nightshade, legume, phenol, sulfate, nut, most carbohydrate, histamine intolerant. I’m really healthy, a size 8 and feel amazing.- but my diet is like a minefield. I eat bone broth – grass fed organic, every day and I get a reaction off that – hives on my face. Same with collagen pulver ( again organic grass fed etc )
I really need help to solve this – I’ve spent the last 10 years working it all out, but what do I do to a) stop it escalating. 2 ) How do I heal it.
The hives, can be white and raised mainly on chin. Nose or below cheekbones – my face swells up. If really bad, the red veins which are horizontal , join the hives and open into what looks like razor blade like cuts, no blood, but ooze a clear liquid. I live in abject fear of this. If I eat lemon or orange peel or it’s in anything, My lips swell up, the skin begins to peel off the inside of my mouth., and I get a strawberry birthmark type thing that starts at my mouth and goes right up to my nose. When I first saw this I nearly died. I was terrified it would spread further , but thankfully, it didn’t. It went away gradually over a period of 6 days. Have you ever come across anything like this please ? Do you know of anyone who can help me. I’ve been through doctors, specialists, no one seems to know what to do. I cured myself so far, 8 years ago, I was unconscious for 20 hours per day which awful symptoms. My life was a nightmare. I’ve sorted 85% of it now, just the gut related allergies left now / but I am stumped!
Would really appreciate your help. I’m a trained integrative nutrition holistic health coach and I’ve done Chris Kresser’s adapt training and tonnes of my own research and experimentation but still no answers. My daughter also has started with the same problems.

I’m sorry, but I have not encountered this before. It sounds like you have taken all of the right approaches. Maybe an elimination diet to address which ingredients are causing the issues so you can avoid them in the future? It sounds like you know what most are, but unfortunately I do not have any further suggestions. Wishing you all the best!
