15 Reasons to Stop Eating Sugar and How to Detox

I used to believe that sugar was okay. I knew it was unhealthy for you, but I mistakenly believed that it was similar to other vices and acceptable in moderation. I then considered going on a sugar detox.

It didn't really make a difference in my happiness and health until I gave it up.

As a trainer, I was instructed to follow the maxim "calories in, calories out" as if it were a holy book.

that as long as you stay "under your calories," you can eat anything and still lose weight.

Thank God, I've been purified.

If you’re having trouble sticking to your diet, staying under your calories, or just getting motivated to lose weight… I know the problem…
.
It’s sugar.

sugar foods high calories

The worst element in the modern diet is added sugar.

Does that seem extreme?

A lot of contemporary fitness authorities would laugh at that claim.

In particular, individuals who promote the notion that you can "Eat delicious foods every day and still get a 6-pack!"

This ought to be obvious to everyone, but it sells because people, including myself, want to believe it.

The REAL deal is this: Unless they are exceptionally talented by genetics or are not training at high intensity (such as gym rats or triathletes),

, sugar is public enemy #1.

And even those people would GREATLY benefit from cutting it out.

There is not a single substance on planet earth that will drive you to more frustration or headaches with weight loss and being healthy than SUGAR.

To drive this point home, I have created this list of 15 reasons to stop eating sugar + how to detox.

These points are all backed by evidence, and the studies have been cited.

1. Sugar is addictive.

How addictive is it?

Scientists ran a study on rats to examine how powerful certain addictions were. It turns out that with everything equal, rats PREFERRED more sugar over more cocaine (1).

Sugar is one of the most addictive substances on planet earth.

The reason you don’t think you’re addicted to it is that sugar in the diet is often masked…

2. Sugar is often HIDDEN.

I'll issue you a challenge: get up, go to your refrigerator, and select your top three condiments right now.

They're probably all loaded with sugar.

Non-fat yogurt tastes like heaven in a cup for a reason. It has A TON of sugar.

Businesses are aware of its addictiveness. For this reason, in order to keep you addicted to the items, your favorite brands may include trace amounts of it.

Sugar has been given DOZENS of different names to help hide them in our foods (2).

They’ve got you eating it without even realizing it.

3. Sugar makes you feel unsatisfied.

Two Donuts - High in Sugar

Sugar is like lighting a napalm bomb in your metabolism.

Added sugar is not satiating and will cause you to continue to feel hungry and unsatisfied after eating it (3).

Compare this to something like protein, which is so satiating that it causes a decrease in calories consumed by 441 daily.

It’s easy to understand why sugar is causing us to be fat.

4. Sugar makes you fat.

The first study to lead us to believe that fat causes fat was a widely publicized study conducted in the 1970s. For decades afterward, everyone was rushing around preaching low fat.

Regretfully, the study relied solely on association, and it was subsequently established that sugar and excessive consumption are the primary issues. (4).

And why is sugar sooooo easy to overconsume???

5. Sugar blocks your weight loss hormone – Leptin.

The hormone that controls your body's weight and energy levels is called leptin.

Leptin reacts with extra body weight by telling the brain, "Okay, that's enough food." I'm content.

It also conveys a crucial message, which is, "Let's get up and burn off some of this excess weight."

Actually, compared to individuals who are smaller, those who are overweight or obese create more leptin.

The problem?

The insulin spike from sugar stops leptin from getting to the brain and communicating these messages. Essentially, it blocks your natural weight loss hormone from doing its job!

But it’s not just hormones in the body that it effects.  It’s also chemicals in the brain.

6. Sugar destroys your motivation.

Sugar destroys your motivation

Dopamine, the motivation neurochemical in your brain, gets a radically high hit every time you eat sugar.

This causes your brain to down-regulate dopamine production making it less likely you’ll feel joy or pleasure from eating healthy foods – like a salad.

This process DESTROYS your motivation and makes it even less likely you’ll lose weight.

And it affects your brain in more way than one…

7. Sugar causes brain fog and midday crashes.

The majority of your noon slumps are caused by the large insulin rise that occurs after eating anything sugary, which is followed by a significant collapse.

The brain does not require sweets.

Sugar has also been shown to contribute to cognitive decline and memory loss (5).

8. Sugar is ruining your teeth.

A dentist by the name of Weston A. Price was astounded over a century ago by the increase in cavities in children and the rising demand for orthodontic braces.

He left his job to explore the connection between diet and dental health. He and his spouse visited tribes that were isolated from industrialized society and agricultural advancements, and they found that tooth decay was almost nonexistent, even in populations where people did not brush their teeth.

Consuming sugar has been related to tooth decay in numerous studies.

And it's making our children's issue worse.

9. There is a strong link between childhood obesity and sugar.

Childhood obesity and sugar

As the consumption of sugary drinks and treats for kids rises, so do the levels of childhood obesity (6>).

This should come as no surprise.

And if obesity wasn’t bad enough… There is that thing that they call “cancer…”

10. Sugar feeds cancer cells.

Sugar molecules are present in a large number of cancer cells.

A 2013 study at the University of Copenhagen showed that sugar aids the growth of malignant cells (7).

11. Sugar is ruining your skin.

A study by researchers at Unilever found a connection between low blood sugar levels and healthy, youthful skin. (8).

So if you’re interested in avoiding wrinkles, sagging skin, and breakouts, then turn your attention to cutting out sugar from your diet.

12. Sugar is the premier definition of empty calories.

sugar drink soda

It contains NO nutritional value.

No Minerals.  No Vitamins.  Just Calories.

This net 0 in your body also causes other problems…

13. Sugar is making your body sick.

Are you one of those people who seems to get sick all the time? Sugar could be one of the issues.

Sugar has been shown to suppress the immune system and cause your body to get sick more often (9).

That suppressed immune system will become very vulnerable when the winter rolls around or when doing activities like flying on a plane.

Try adding lemon water to your routine to take your detox to the next level. It’s loaded with health benefits and will help your body fight some of the usual detox symptoms when cutting out sugar.

14. Sugar is not a worthy reward.

I hope I've been able to persuade you that sugar is the main factor contributing to the global health crisis.

The unfortunate part is that individuals are frequently advised to treat themselves to a treat.

You're not canine. You don't require food as payment.

The takeaway is this: Sugar isn't a deserving treat after working out, hitting a new career milestone, or really anything else.

Here’s the key…

15. Treat sugar like the addictive substance it is!

sugar is addictive and dangerous
Everybody has friends or family members who smoke. Though we still adore them, isn't it better if they abstained from smoking a drug that is proven to cause cancer?

Would you ever suggest to such person that they should just smoke occasionally?

No. We always ask them, “When are you going to QUIT?”

So, on that note…

HOW do we quit!?

Unfortunately, there isn't a miraculous cure or drink that will satisfy your needs.

You can, however, eat the RIGHT foods to help reduce cravings and adopt a positive mindset, which will help you defeat them ultimately.

How to Get in the Right Mindset

We just covered this above.

Knowledge is power.

You have to believe that it’s good for you and that you’re doing the right thing in order to have the strength and discipline to stay away.

Make the decision about your HEALTH – whether it be your skin, weight, teeth, children, or all of the above. Don’t make it about your taste buds.

How to Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet

eat a healthy and balanced diet to detox from sugar

We all secretly know this, but we just choose not to give it enough attention.

Healthy protein, healthy carbs, and healthy fats.

When your body is getting the right nutrients, it will naturally crave less of the bad stuff.  This will become more evident the longer you stick with it.

Get a good protein powder, and have that between meals if you’re feeling cravings. Protein is the most satiating nutrient on the planet, and it will help keep you full between meals.

How to Build New Routines

More power to you if you can muster the will and self control to quit cold turkey and never look back! That puts you in the top 1%.

However, you are most likely reading this because you find it a little more challenging.

You'll most likely break sooner rather than later if you start off too harsh. That's why people rarely succeed with really tight diets.

Instead, start building new habits – one routine at a time.

Start with your morning coffee, for example. Instead of using cream and sugar, use unsweetened cashew or coconut milk, or mix in little cinnamon and coconut oil. Next, get started on lunch. Next, get to work preparing dinner.

Sip apple cider vinegar or peppermint tea. But let's go one step farther... Spice up your drink with turmeric and cinnamon.

Or try adding a superfood powder!

So not only are you avoiding something TERRIBLE for your body, but you are replacing it with an INCREDIBLY HEALTHY choice. How empowering is that!?

Build new routines and habits to replace the old ones.  Just take it one step at a time.

How to Phone a Friend

Make an effort to win over your buddy, roommate, or partner. Having someone else hold you responsible makes things much easier.

Ask for help from them if you're feeling tempted.

How to Throw It Out

Put EVERY offender in the garbage. Don't be sorry about money you lost. By consuming it first, you're doing more damage to yourself.

If your children consume unhealthy foods, this may be more challenging, but try your hardest to eliminate anything you can and encourage them to adopt a better diet.

You thus have to drive to the store to make a purchase whenever you start to have desires. You'll find it much simpler to resist the urges as a result!

Now my question to you is…

“When are YOU going to quit?”

You’ll find that once you cut sugar and other refined substances out of your diet, the cravings will go away.

You’ll be left with freedom from cravings and a healthier and happier life.

  1. Can I still use honey? I’m trying to eat less sugar every day (unfortunately I don’t see myself quitting cold-turkey anytime soon) but is honey a good replacement?

    1. Avriel, that’s a great question. Honey is highly debated as to whether it’s “good for you” or not. This is what we (and most health profressionals) believe: It’s still straight sugar. Honey does have health benefits, and it can be especially good to take when you’re sick. (Alex put it in warm apple cider vinegar water a couple times a day when he had a sinus infection a couple weeks ago). That being said, it’s not a regular part of our diet. I cook with it once in a blue moon, and I definitely use it before ever adding sugar, but I try to avoid it when I can. I definitely don’t add it to coffee or tea, because there is very little difference there than adding sugar. People mistakenly use large quantities thinking it’s “healthy,” but the sugar quantity negates that in most circumstances. I would really just recommend using it moderately. Let me know if you have any other questions about it or need some advice on substitutions! 🙂

    1. Rosie, it should be cut out completely anytime you are doing a full sugar detox. As far as everyday life goes… it’s perfectly fine in moderation. Alex and I love red wine and drink it about once a week or so. We really don’t eat sugar other than that, except for holidays or the once in a while dessert splurge. Just find a place for it in your life, and make sure you set a limit for yourself to make sure that you don’t overdo it 🙂
